This chip was released in 1978 by general instruments as the AY-3-8910.
It made it's way into arcade machines, the Atari ST, ZX Spectrum and was licensed by Yamaha who bolted on a selectable clock divider as well as a double-resolution and double-rate volume envelope table.

So thats why we are using this chip.

It has a nice clean output no noise or unwanted spurious signals.
